Nomz
Nomz is an iOS app that turns social media posts into recipes. It reads description text, on-video text, and voiceovers, then adds consistent units and quantities, substitutions, and macros.
Why I built this
Nomz was the very first project that I built exclusively with AI. I love cooking and save a lot of social media recipes as inspiration for things to cook. Different creators have different styles for how they make their videos. Some put the full instructions in the video itself, which I have to screenshot. Some put them in the description, and some just do a voiceover.
The voiceover ones are the most annoying because I have to pause and keep replaying the video to follow the recipe. I thought creating an app to solve this would be a good way to get into full AI development, especially since I hadn't built an iOS app from scratch before either.

The stack
The primary feature of the app is handling the different ways creators share recipes in their posts, whether that is text in the description, text in the video, or just voiceovers. I initially thought I would scrape the posts' descriptions, transcribe the audio, or run OCR on the video frames, but then I found Supadata and it was pretty solid. I used it so I could focus my efforts on making the iOS app functional instead.
More than just a recipe
Apart from the different recipe formats in creators' posts, I wanted to make sure Nomz generates a consistent format for every recipe. It makes sure each one has proper units and quantities and lists all the ingredients properly.
It can also tell you what ingredients can be substituted if you don't have the original ingredient on hand, and it generates macros for the recipe.

This was a satisfying first real try creating an iOS app for the first time while also developing exclusively with AI for the first time.
